    BOIL WATER NOTICE IN STAMFORD UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

    Due to a large water main break in the Village of Stamford, the NY State Department of Health has ordered that all village tap water be boiled prior to consumption. The village is working right now to fix the break, but the Health Department will have to test the water before the order can be lifted, which could take several days.

    While a notice to boil water is in effect, changes must be make in the ordinary use and consumption of tap water for food preparation, personal hygiene, and domestic use.

    There is no indication right now that the village water is contaminated, which can be determined only by health department testing. However, EPA and NY State law require public notification to all water customers of a boil water notice, because this condition is a health risk.

    To ensure destruction of all possible harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking, and making ice should be boiled. The water should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil and then boiled for two minutes. In lieu of boiling, you may purchase bottled water or obtain water from some other suitable source.

    Use boiled or bottled water for brushing teeth and rinsing the mouth. When taking a shower or a bath, take care to avoid swallowing the water. Hand-wash infants to prevent them from swallowing water or putting wet toys into their mouths.

    Boiled or bottled water should be used for preparing beverages, washing fruits and vegetables that will be eaten raw, making ice cubes, preparing dishes and food for cooking.

    Boiled water, stored in sterilized, air-tight containers will usually keep for up to three days in the refrigerator, or for 24 hours at room temperature.

    When it is no longer necessary to boil water, a notice will be published to let citizens know that the water is safe for consumption.
